“New Jersey’s interconnected transportation network is critical to the economic well-being of this state. In this tough budget environment it is difficult to provide the necessary resources to adequately maintain our transportation infrastructure.

“The FY ’12 Capital Program appropriation provides $3.5 billion in funds to keep our roads, bridges and trains in good condition. These monies are appropriated without any new taxes or additional borrowing.

The five Republican members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee agreed today with Governor Christie, Attorney General Dow and former Governor Corzine that the provision requiring early release of inmates in the law be immediately repealed:

“It is unfortunate that the commitment that former Governor Corzine received to repeal this ill-conceived provision of the law was not honored. In fact, Governor Corzine at the time he signed the bill, issued a signing statement that reads in part; ‘that the provision of the bill that would require parole release six months before the maximum expiration of the sentence in cases where the No Early Release Act does not apply, will be removed through immediate remedial legislation.’

Public School Funding Is the Sole Responsibility of the Legislature

Senator Michael Doherty, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement regarding the special master’s decision in the latest school funding case:

“Governor Christie got it exactly right in his budget address when he stated that ‘we must end the myth that more money equals better achievement. It is a failed legal theory, and we can no longer waste our children’s time or the public’s money waiting for it to finally work.’

Senator Michael Doherty (R-Warren and Hunterdon), a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, issued the following comment on Governor Christie’s proposed budget.

“I am delighted that Governor Christie’s commitment to fiscally-responsible stewardship of the state budget includes; a 2.6 percent reduction in spending over the last fiscal year. This is the second year in a row that Governor Christie has decreased the state budget. These reductions have been accomplished while reducing our reliance on ‘one-shot’ revenues and increasing our commitment to job growth.

“The budget proposed today is a fiscally prudent budget that funds the services that ensure that this state will be able to meet its obligations in the future. Additionally, the governor upheld his commitment to public education by increasing funding for schools across the board. This year every school district in the state will see a significant increase in state aid.

State Senators Michael J. Doherty (R- Warren, Hunterdon) and Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union) issued the following statements in reaction to the announcement that the now defunct ARC Tunnel project will be replaced by a similar “Gateway Tunnel” undertaken by Amtrak:

Senator Doherty:

“Lo and behold, good things happen when you stand up for the taxpayers. The ARC Tunnel project, was a massively bad deal for New Jersey taxpayers being pushed by spendthrift Democratic politicians for all the wrong reasons: personal legacies, political agendas, and election year posturing. Nothing more perfectly exemplifies the folly of ARC than Senator Menendez’s mind-boggling assertion that a dead-end route to Macy’s basement made sense.

Senator Michael Doherty today called on state and federal law enforcement officials to investigate an undercover video purporting to show an employee of Planned Parenthood in Perth Amboy offering advice to a pimp about how to cover-up his involvement in human trafficking and sexual slavery.

The Senator sent a letter to Attorney General Paula Dow asking her to investigate the undercover video. Click here for PDF.

“This conduct is abhorrent,” Doherty began. “That this agency and its employees would implicitly endorse the trafficking and exploitation of underage sex slaves is beyond my comprehension.”

“It is more repulsive that this same agency has repeatedly asked the state and federal governments to fund its activities with taxpayer dollars,” Doherty continued. “I believe that the taxpayers of this state will want a full and thorough investigation of this organization and its activities.”
